What do we love?
Laos is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including lush mountains, serene rivers, and breathtaking waterfalls like the Kuang Si Falls. The country also boasts a rich cultural heritage, with vibrant traditions, festivals, and historic Buddhist temples such as the Pha That Luang. We love that it has a growing focus on sustainable tourism to help preserve its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
What are the challenges?
Access to education is limited, particularly in rural areas, and most schools that run are under-resourced and under-staffed. Coupled with prevalent rates of malnutrition and poor health care, many children are struggling to receive what they need to survive and thrive. Many families are struggling without incomes, so children are often being forced to labour instead of attending school; and rates of stunted growth and preventable diseases remain high.
What are our partners doing?
CRY partners with a project in Rural Laos, supporting children and youth who need it the most. They provide much needed food in the Feeding Programme, educate children in ways to make a living, aiding education and providing school uniforms and resources, and providing warm clothing to children in the poorest areas. Their focus is on development, including teaching children to sew, to work with electrics, to understand computers, to sew, to know literature and even mechanics. All of this combined, and more, is not only helping children survive but helping them thrive and reach their full potential.
