What do we love?
Guatemala is a country that boasts diversity – it is home to 22 distinct Mayan languages, and beyond that blends Mayan heritage, Spanish colonial influences and modern progress. We love to celebrate this diversity, almost as much as Guatemala loves to celebrate in their many annual festivals.
What are the challenges?
Levels of sexual abuse in Guatemala are heartbreakingly high. In Guatemala, 96% of crimes reported against children go unpunished (source). Statistically speaking, every day 23 cases of sexual abuse against children are reported, and every day, 6 children under the age of 14 give birth to a child as, a result of rape (source).
What are our partners doing?
We partner with Kids Alive, who run the Justice Centre in Guatemala, focusing on legal support for children, victims of sexual violence, and their families. Seeing justice served for what they have suffered, has a huge therapeutic impact on the well-being of the child, facilitates family reintegration and contributes to a more just society in Guatemala. In just one year, they accompanied 48 children and adolescents who benefited from the support provided by the Justice centre. The freedom they help to bring is imperative to seeing children reach their full potential.
